The Story Behind the Walking of the Giant

Walking the Sleeping Giant

By Francois Louw

For years, I admired the striking mountain behind Du Kloof Lodge — shaped like a giant lying on his back. Guests often asked, “Is there a hiking trail up there?” That curiosity sparked a journey I never expected.

At first, we planned a short trail to a viewpoint. But the mountain kept calling us higher. The terrain was rough, the team changed often, and I had to confront my fear of heights. In 2015, we finally reached the summit, and the Sleeping Giant Trail was born. Most who attempted it couldn’t finish — it was that tough.

Then, in 2016, I felt a pull to explore further. I climbed again, hoping to turn the trail into a circular route. At the summit, I discovered a waterfall and, despite fear, pressed on — only to find myself lost and without signal. A moment of arrogance quickly turned into a deep cry for help. I prayed, repented, and relied completely on God.

Step by step, doors opened. Eventually, I found a stream, followed it, and after hours of climbing, crawling, and swimming, I reached the Molenaars River. From there, I made it back to the Lodge — 8½ hours later, exhausted and humbled.

It took another six months to complete the trail. We left many natural obstacles intact — steep slopes, rocks, rivers — because they’re part of the experience. Waking the Giant isn’t just a hike. It’s a challenge of body, mind, and spirit.

If you’re ready to push your limits, the Giant is waiting.

Trail Runner Review

Walking the Giant

Review by Christiaan Greyling

Trail running is about more than speed — it’s about exploring the wild and awakening the spirit. That’s what drew me to the #WakingTheGiant FKT challenge: 6.5km, 600m ascent, and a shot at a weekend away at the stunning Du Kloof Lodge.

It looked manageable on paper… until the trail turned into a waterfall after recent rains. The last 3km felt more like kloofing than running. FKT or not, time in nature always rewards.

Thanks to Du Kloof Lodge for building inspiring trails and inviting us to connect with something deeper. Looking for a challenge and epic views? Like their page and check out the competitions!
